Preschool

Preschool focuses on play-based activities and lays the foundation for future learning. Preschool provides an educational program for children in the year before starting school that supports the development of early language, literacy, numeracy and social skills.

When to enrol in Preschool

If your child turns four on or before 31 July, you may enrol your child in that year. Contact us to find out how to enrol.

Getting prepared

The welcome to preschool parents guide (PDF 626KB) will help make the start of your child's learning journey a positive and happy experience. It contains handy hints to help prepare your child for Preschool. Parents can find out more about our preschool in the Pendle Hill Preschool Handbook (PDF 422KB).

Transition to school

We have a set of planned activities to make sure your child has a smooth start to Kindergarten. Contact us to find out about our activities and how you can be involved.

Help your child learn

Children learn best when parents and teachers work together. Here are some ways you can support your child while they are going to Preschool:

  • find out as much as you can about our Preschool e.g. the routines, what your child needs to bring to class
  • get involved if possible, e.g. volunteer as a helper
  • talk with the Preschool staff about activities that you can do with your child at home e.g. reading with your child
  • talk with your child's teacher about what your child is learning
  • talk with your child each day about what they did at Preschool.

Learning at Preschool

Your child's learning at preschool will build on what you have taught them at home. During play your child will use their imagination, learn to get along with others, plan and listen.

Our preschool teachers are fully qualified in early childhood studies. The learning experiences your child takes part in through play will be carefully planned by the teacher and directed by your child's interests.

Preschool activities for learning

  •  Puzzles and playing with blocks
  •  Painting, drawing and writing, cutting and pasting
  •  Reading books and listening to stories
  • Talking and listening
  •  Dressing up and playing in the home corner or cubby house
  •  Listening to and playing music
  • Dancing and drama
  • Climbing on equipment, balancing, running and jumping
  • Using computers
  • * Playing with clay, play dough, sand and water

Through these learning experiences your child will explore and experiment, and develop their skills in solving problems, communicating and socialising.

They will also develop self-esteem, confidence and the foundations for their formal learning.

Preschool will help prepare your child for school and the transition to school program includes involvement in a range of  classroom and school activities.
